Famously using Bernard Edwards’ bassline from Chic’s ‘Good times’, The Sugarhill Gang’s ‘Rapper’s Delight’ from 1979 is generally accepted as being the first commercially successful hip hop track. Most of the borrowed elements were played live rather than sampled as is the way with most hip hop, so it was an unconventional track to achieve such success. Appreciating the compliment, Chic came to incorporate it into their own live sets as part of an extended ‘Good Times’, in the same way they use Modjo’s ‘Lady (hear me tonight)’ which similarly utilised a sample from their ‘Soup for one.’
